Successfully Hiring Contract Workers as Permanent Staff

Did you know that 49 percent of contract employees say that contract work is a way to get a permanent job?

Match Hire®, or Temp to Perm, can be a win-win for both you and the employee. Typically, a Match Hire assignment starts with a short-term position, anywhere from three months to one year, with the end goal of converting the individual to a permanent employee at the end of the contract.

There are a few things to keep in mind when trying to successfully convert a temporary employee to a permanent employee.

Communicate with Your Staff

Your staff can be your biggest asset or enemy when it comes to Match Hire. Communicate with them to let them know your goals include hiring the travelers you bring in full time, which will help increase retention rates. Use your core staff to be your advocates on the unit. Making the traveler feel like they are part of the family right away will have a huge impact on them coming on board permanently.

Structured and Smooth Orientation

Orientation is the first impression contractors have of your organization and you only get one chance to make that first impression. By having a well-run, helpful orientation you are putting your best foot forward. Also be sure to touch base a few weeks after orientation to see how things are going. Ask their opinion on how things are run on the unit and use their previous experience at other facilities to your advantage and capitalize on opportunities to make improvements to your units if applicable.

Be Up Front Early with the Contractor

You want to make sure the contractor is a good fit so keep a close eye on them in the first four weeks. Talk to your staff about the performance and cultural fit of the contractor. If it is going well early on, start to have that conversation with the contractor. Present the idea that you would like to bring them on full time so you are planting that seed in their mind.
